San Diego Weddings and Unique Portraits

Welcome to my archived blog space for Papaya Sky Photography. I ran Papaya Sky Photography part time in addition to my day job from the end of 2009 to 2012. After my son turned a few months old I decided to retire the business in order to focus more of my time on my two young kids and my day job.

For more information about what I'm doing now, please visit my current online portfolio website at www.motionjen.com.

Photo-a-Day 2012

Once again, I will be attempting the photo-a-day project. :) Hopefully I will get a bit farther this year, if nothing else to continue taking pictures of all of the new arrivals appearing in 2012. My lovely sister will be having her first child sometime this month and Steve and I will be expecting another child in June. It will certainly be an exciting year!

This first week are all photos taken with my 85mm lens (on my 50D crop body camera) @ f1.8.

Monday: Ornaments on the tree

Tuesday: Giant dice, though without anything next to them for reference they look regular size. You can see the narrow depth of focus best in this picture.
Wednesday: Top of a trophy
Thursday: Gwinna, about to make mischief
Friday: Dragon candle holder
Saturday: Candles
Sunday: Gwinna and Steve, I just love the light and wind in her hair.

Photo-a-Day 2011: Week 11, Random

Actually, I'm not really sure what week it is officially of this project...obviously I skipped some in there. I work as a graphic artist for a semiconductor company and we just had a big trade show a couple of weeks ago in Baltimore. Between prepping for that and taking care of the baby, something had to be put aside. I decided it was best to keep feeding the husband and young daughter and put aside the photo project for a while (cause man, Steve sure knows how to whine when he gets hungry!). ;)

I'll need to sort out my assignment list again, so until I'm back in the habit I've decided to give myself a break and allow random photos for a while. So of course, a lot of them are of Gwinna. But hey, since I haven't been posting pictures of her to facebook either this should satiate the barrage of requests from various family members at least a little bit.

Monday: Some fabric swatches I purchased for a project my sister and I are working on. It is top secret and will be extremely lucrative. Well, probably more lucrative than trying to sell my husband tanning lotion anyway. Because he's pale, you see.
Tuesday: Love this shot of Gwinna! Now you can see what I see when I follow this amazing explorer around outside as she discovers new and interesting objects/items to put in her mouth. I'll probably post the full series later this week, it was hilarious to watch her with a mouthful of seeds!
Wednesday: I have no idea what kind of flowers these are but they come up from seed every year. We started out with a light purple one that must have been a hybrid. The next year's flowers came up all different sorts of purple and one coveted plant produced an incredibly dark, rich purply red. Most beautiful flower ever! Well, that and all of the other dark-purply red flowers out there.
Thursday: First ocean shot with long exposure. What in the world haven't i ever done this before?? You will probably be seeing more of these later on. :)
Friday: We had a fruit thief in our yard, and I discovered the culprit!! This little fig tree had tiny, tiny baby figs that were apparently way too much fun to pull off. Luckily, the rest of the figs reside a bit higher on the tree and our little rouge can only reach up about 2 1/2 feet or so, so i still might get a fig or two to eat when they ripen up.
Saturday: Gwinna greets her dad when he wakes up Saturday morning. She's just discovered she can step up onto my pillow to peek out the window and positively squeals with delight when she looks over at Steve.
Sunday: She's of the age where she is in constant motion whenever she's awake, so having a waking yet quiet moment with her is a rare and special occasion.

Photo-a-Day 2011: Week 8 The eye

This week was eyeball week. Yay, eyeballs!

Monday: The cat...yes, he is as evil as his eye looks. We named him Rasputin.
Tuesday: Steve's eye, and it looks like the light is actually coming through his eyeball. Cool!
Wednesday: Steve's eye again, this time I wanted a dark background so I can really see how pale his eyelashes are. I think it's a good idea to document qualities of rare phenotypes as often as possible. :)
Thursday: Gwinna's eye, narrow depth of focus making the image a bit abstracty too. Yes, that is a real term! Ok, no it isn't. :)
Friday: Gwinna again, black and white with blue eyes
Saturday: Another kitty eyeSunday: The eye of my mom's bird, Lucy. Lucy is a little over 29 years old, which is about a billion years old in bird years.

Photo-a-Day 2011: Week 6 Free Choice

Yes, I had a week off and then a free choice week, so some random photos from the last two weeks comin' at ya. :)

Windows and doors:
Yeah, laser pointer door! It's a magic door. ;)
Grunge effect on a tattoo parlor door
Cool door knocker on my friend Teresa's door.
Awesome gourd art by Teresa Unger. I got to see the rest of the currently unfinished gourds in this series hung in iridescent jewel-like splendor from several intertwining branches emerging from the ceiling of her living room. Gwinna loved them...just sat underneath and babbled and babbled at them like they were the coolest objects she had ever seen.
Teresa holds Gwinna closeThe dog takes the opportunity to steal a kiss!
It's been raining the last few days....love love love the rain!!!

My sister-in-law came by for a visit and we collected 4-leaf clovers for good luck. Snapped this shot of her and Gwinna as they were coming back inside the house. :)

Photo-a-Day 2011: Week 5, Black and White

I'll probably do black and white again on one of my free choice weeks...there were a lot of ideas I wanted to try out and I just never seem to have time for them all! But, such is life. :)

Monday: Poinsettia lit from the side by a diffused flash
Tuesday: Tried to get an abstract shot of a glass, but thought that this would have been better in color after reviewing the shots afterwards. ah well, you never know until you try. :)
Wednesday: Portrait of my lovely mother standing by a wall with polished rocks embedded in it. :)
Thursday: Portrait of Jimmy, flash from the side
Friday: Gwinna eating rice cereal. We just started giving her solids and are amazed on how little actually gets inside the baby. ;)
Saturday: Gwinna examining the carpet, soft light from a window
Sunday: Interesting collection in someone's garage

Photo-a-Day 2011: Week 4, Motion Shots

This week I wanted to experiment with representing motion in a variety of different ways. I think I might do this particular assignment again...I realized while doing it there's a lot to learn about taking a good motion or action shot and it can be pretty challenging! Of course, I can't play with the big boys and actually use a lens built for this type of thing (they are, alas, worth more than my current car), but at least I can figure out the best I can do with my current equipment. :)

Monday: Camera on tripod with a long exposure captures Gwinna scooting across the floor.
Tuesday: Sensei Bernice demonstrates a technique for her Aikido class
Wednesday: Water comes out from a sprayer, lit from a flash from the side
Thursday-Saturday: Yes, I did take pictures these days, but they actually had nothing to do with the assignment. woops! But that ok, because I went to the Wild Animal Park Sunday with my two best friends and my lovely husband and daughter. They all kindly posed for the remainder of the shots for the week. :)

Shot 4: A series of shots taken in burst mode
Shot 5: Fighting Lorikeets
Shot 6: Zoomed the lens out during a delayed exposure as I took the shot, bit of diffused flash from the side to make their faces pop.
Shot 7: I loved the way this shot came out....remote flash
