San Diego Weddings and Unique Portraits

Welcome to my archived blog space for Papaya Sky Photography. I ran Papaya Sky Photography part time in addition to my day job from the end of 2009 to 2012. After my son turned a few months old I decided to retire the business in order to focus more of my time on my two young kids and my day job.

For more information about what I'm doing now, please visit my current online portfolio website at www.motionjen.com.

Personal: A new painting!

It's been a while since I've gotten a chance to continue my series of abstract paintings that I began a few years ago, but last fall I got the perfect spurt of inspiration to finish this small gem. My uncle decided to buy a brand-new house and wanted to fill it with some bright pieces of artwork. Originally he called me inquiring about ordering some prints of my other paintings, but a few days later I got a call for for an original piece...from his son and daughter. They had decided to pool their resources to get their dad a painting for a Christmas present and I was the lucky recipient of the commission.

I'd forgotten how much I enjoy painting...how the layers and layers of colors build to create different shades and depths in the surface.

Photo-a-Day 2011: Week 6 Free Choice

Yes, I had a week off and then a free choice week, so some random photos from the last two weeks comin' at ya. :)

Windows and doors:
Yeah, laser pointer door! It's a magic door. ;)
Grunge effect on a tattoo parlor door
Cool door knocker on my friend Teresa's door.
Awesome gourd art by Teresa Unger. I got to see the rest of the currently unfinished gourds in this series hung in iridescent jewel-like splendor from several intertwining branches emerging from the ceiling of her living room. Gwinna loved them...just sat underneath and babbled and babbled at them like they were the coolest objects she had ever seen.
Teresa holds Gwinna closeThe dog takes the opportunity to steal a kiss!
It's been raining the last few days....love love love the rain!!!

My sister-in-law came by for a visit and we collected 4-leaf clovers for good luck. Snapped this shot of her and Gwinna as they were coming back inside the house. :)

Baby Olivia: January 20, 2011

Darling little Olivia wasn't even two weeks old yet when I took these shots, but her beautiful brown eyes were completely bright and alert. No sleeping baby shots this session! She'll have a lot to look at as she grows, starting with the fun and colorful mural on her nursery wall.

Olivia's talented mother, Morgan of Pepper designs (check out her website here http://www.pepperdesignblog.com/), plans to renovate several rooms in their quaint 1930s house. I just loved what she did with the nursery, so cute!!

Photo-a-Day 2011: Week 5, Black and White

I'll probably do black and white again on one of my free choice weeks...there were a lot of ideas I wanted to try out and I just never seem to have time for them all! But, such is life. :)

Monday: Poinsettia lit from the side by a diffused flash
Tuesday: Tried to get an abstract shot of a glass, but thought that this would have been better in color after reviewing the shots afterwards. ah well, you never know until you try. :)
Wednesday: Portrait of my lovely mother standing by a wall with polished rocks embedded in it. :)
Thursday: Portrait of Jimmy, flash from the side
Friday: Gwinna eating rice cereal. We just started giving her solids and are amazed on how little actually gets inside the baby. ;)
Saturday: Gwinna examining the carpet, soft light from a window
Sunday: Interesting collection in someone's garage
